Tips for Artists

The following are suggestions only. They will help you to photograph, submit and post/courier your paintings.

APPENDIX A/   Photographing your paintings.  

You should photograph your paintings BEFORE framing them and before putting them under glass. We suggest photographing them outside, in daylight and with the camera square on to the painting so there are no angles. If your painting is on a sheet of paper, such as for a watercolour or pastel, we suggest you photograph it still on the easel so it is flat. Crop the finished photo making sure there are no edges showing. We want a photo of the painting itself. You may also submit a photo of your painting framed if you wish as there is provision on the website to display two photos. That way your buyer can see the frame as well. Our min. requirements are 1,900 pixels wide X 1,000 pixels high (or the reverse for portrait paintings) with a min. DPI of 300.

APPENDIX B/   Packaging your artwork.  

1: If your painting is under glass, less than 60 cms wide or high, we recommend wrapping it in a MINIMUM of two layers of bubble wrap with cardboard corner protectors as supplied by framers, if these are not available cut four strips of cardboard approx. 20 cms long and 6 to 8 cms wide, fold and place over corners BETWEEN the first and second layer of bubble wrap. Tape the entire painting with 50 mm clear packing tape. Then cut two pieces of 6 mm MDF cut 20 mm larger than the frame of the painting both in width and height. Cut 8 strips of bubble-wrap 150mm wide and the length of your frame, roll them up length ways and stick these “sausages” around the perimeter of the package ON EACH SIDE thus creating a space between the glass and MDF. Place the MDF front and back of your painting and secure well with clear, 50 mm clear packing tape (dispensers available from all good hardware stores). Lastly, make sure to add “FRAGILE—GLASS INSIDE—TRANSPORT ON EDGE, DO NOT LIE FLAT OR PLACE ANYTHING ON TOP”. Then add the delivery address on the front marked TO: and your senders name and address marked SENDER: Cover all signs with tape. REFER TO THE PHOTOS BELOW.

2: If it is more than 60 cms wide or high, we suggest that in addition to the above, you obtain and tape two pieces of 50 mm X 19 mm timber in the middle of the painting  the same length as the shortest side of the frame directly on to the Bubble Wrap, front and back BEFORE securing the 6 mm MDF to the front and back of the package. This will provide extra protection and stop the MDF flexing and pressing against the glass.

3:  For any painting over 100 cms wide or high, we suggest you use a reputable art delivery specialist.

4: If it is NOT under glass, we suggest you still wrap it in at least two layers of Bubble Wrap and place the 6mm MDF boards on BOTH sides appropriately stuck on with the packing tape and appropriately labeled.

5: If it just a sheet such as an unframed watercolour, you may choose to wrap it in tissue paper, attach it to a piece of cardboard the same size and place it in a padded post bag from the Post Office. Don’t forget to clearly mark it “DO NOT BEND OR FOLD”.

FINALLY, DON’T FORGET TO WEIGH THE FINISHED PACKAGE. YOU WILL NEED THIS INFO. FOR EITHER THE POST OFFICE OR COURIER BOOKING

REMEMBER: It is your legal responsibility to package and deliver your painting to the buyer in good condition. If it is not packaged protectively and is damaged in transit as a result, not only will it cost you to retrieve it, but you also may lose a sale. This may result in an adverse review to you as an artist, but will also reflect badly on AAA. If damage is caused in transit by the courier, you may be eligible to claim under their insurance cover of up to $1,000.00.
