Squeaky Beach, Wilson’s Promontory

This beautiful park is located in Gippsland, Victoria, 157 klms. s/east of Melbourne. Known for its rain-forests, beaches and abundant wildlife, it is a favorite of bush walkers and campers. It covers 125,000 acres on the southern-most tip of the Australian mainland. It has been occupied by indigenous people for over 6,500 years and was first sighted by George Bass and Mathew Flinders in 1798. It was preserved by the Victorian Government as a National Park in 1898. Sealing was carried out at Sealers Cove during the 19th century.
During WW11 it was used as a Commando training establishment. In 2009 the Black Saturday bush fires destroyed 50% of the Park. It has since re-generated.
